nora stanley ‘mica’

Nora Stanley is an improviser, composer, and songwriter based in Brooklyn. She variably uses saxophone, flute, clarinet, guitar, synthesizer, and voice in her work which spans jazz, rock and experimental music. She is deeply interested in the relationship between acoustic and synthesized sounds and plays with this throughout her work. As both a solo artist and a collaborator her music emphasizes openness, connection, and deep listening.

In 2023 Stanley released Distance of the Moon (Colorfield Records) with collaborator Benny Bock to acclaim from Fader, Downbeat, and The New York Times who called it “music with a sense of focus and intimacy, yet a kind of unknowability too.” She will release an album of songs entitled Glass in 2026 on Worm Records. Stanley also frequently contributes woodwinds and more to others’ recording projects and has appeared on albums by Cassandra Jenkins, The New Pornographers, and Landlady.

Stanley is a 2023 McDowell fellow and in 2025 was awarded a fellowship through New Music USA’s Next Jazz Legacy program. She holds a B.M. in Jazz Studies and a B.A. in Latin American Studies from Oberlin College and Conservatory.

gregory uhlmann ‘band member’ / composer

Gregory Uhlmann is a guitarist, composer, and producer from Chicago living in Los Angeles. His musical palette embraces beautiful warble-y sounds, low fuzzy vibrations, and playful rhythms that overlap in surprising ways. His often-otherworldly guitar tones and syncopated picking style are immediately recognizable across a vast array of musical collaborations, and that distinction while maintaining a shapeshifting flexibility is no small feat.

Uhlmann’s early work as co-leader of LA indie experimental outfit Fell Runner established his presence on the West coast scene after relocating from Chicago, and his resume since includes stints as a regular recording/touring member of Perfume Genius, Hand Habits, and Anna Butterss’s backing band.

Whether he’s contributing to the LA trance-jazz improvisation of SML, the progressive electro-acoustic chamber music of his trio with Josh Johnson and Sam Wilkes, or in the hushed melancholic rhythm machine of Duffy x Uhlmann (his duo with Meg Duffy of Hand Habits), it’s clear that Uhlmann is a lead asset in every collaboration.

lia kohl ‘band member’

Lia Kohl (b. New York, NY) is a composer and sound artist based in Chicago. Trained as a cellist, she also incorporates synthesizers, field recordings, toy instruments and radios into her work, searching for a balance between virtuosity and curiosity. She gravitates towards sound practices which reveal and speak to their time and place: field recording, improvisation, radio broadcast and transmission. She often focuses on mundane or pedestrian sounds – sounds which often go unnoticed or under-documented, searching for the profound, unknown, and beautiful in everyday life.

She performs as a soloist, a collaborator and composes works for ensembles. Her performances have been presented internationally at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Renaissance Society, Mattress Factory, CNMAT at UC Berkeley, The Royal College of Music (Stockholm), Cooper Hewitt, Union Station Chicago, Eckhart Park Pool, and Big Ears Festival. She has created sound installations for Experimental Sound Studios' Audible Gallery and Roman Susan Art Foundation. She has been a resident artist at ACRE, Vashon Artist Residency, High Concept Labs, Mana Contemporary, Stanford University, and Mills College and a Transmission Art Fellow at Wave Farm.
